You must have a valid license to work as a security guard or private investigator in Ontario. This license needs to be renewed every two years, with the renewal date linked to your date of birth.

The first license you obtain will expire two birthdays after the day it is issued.
For example, if your license was issued on October 1, 2023, and your birthday is December 15, it will expire on December 15, 2024.

Training Course Fee:
This varies as training providers set their own course fees. Please check with your chosen training provider for specific costs.
Exam Fee:
The fee for the mandatory test through SERCO is $35.00 CAD plus 13% HST, totaling $39.55 CAD. This fee covers the test booking and marking, but not the ServiceOntario licensing fee.
ServiceOntario Licensing Fee:
For an individual license (either security guard or private investigator), the cost is $80.
For a dual license (both security guard and private investigator), the cost is $160.
Note: The training course fee and the exam fee are paid separately from the ServiceOntario licensing fee. Additionally, payments are non-refundable, and this applies to applications that are withdrawn, denied, or returned due to errors or incomplete information. Once your application is approved by ServiceOntario, you will be able to download or print your digital license. Physical license cards are no longer issued.
